How it works
You’re shown a sequence of stimuli — shapes appearing on a grid, sounds playing in sequence, or both at once. Your job: decide whether the current stimulus matches the one from N steps back. The N-back task is one of the most researched methods for training working memory.
Start with a single stream (visual or audio) and work your way up to tracking four simultaneous streams at once.
Training modes
- Single N-Back: Track one stream — visual (numbers, letters, shapes, or colors) or audio (spoken numbers or letters). 6 single-mode combinations.
- Dual N-Back: Track two streams at once — position plus sound, position plus visuals, or dual audio. Over 50 combinations.
- Triple N-Back: Track three independent streams simultaneously. 66 combinations spanning position, audio, and visual channels.
- Quad N-Back: The ultimate challenge — track four streams at once. Over 110 combinations with grids, multi-audio, characters, shapes, and colors.
That’s over 190 unique game configurations in total.
Features
- Adaptive difficulty: The algorithm tracks your accuracy per stream and automatically adjusts the N-level up or down after each session. You’re always challenged at the right level.
- Configurable thresholds: Set your own accuracy thresholds for leveling up or down (65–100% correct to advance, 20–60% errors to drop).
- Grid layouts: Choose between compact (1×3) and standard (3×3) grids.
- N-level range: Train from N=1 through N=7.
- Random cell placement: Toggle character position randomization within grid cells for an added challenge.
- Colored cells: Enable color-coded grid cells for visual distinction in multi-stream modes.
- End on first error: Optional instant-fail mode for high-stakes practice.
- How to Play guide: Contextual instructions for each game mode, with diagrams explaining the rules.
- Per-stream scoring: After each session, see accuracy broken down by stream — correct, missed, and incorrect responses tracked separately.
- Color-coded results: Accuracy at a glance — green (85%+), teal (65%+), amber (40%+), red (below 40%).
- Session history: Browse past sessions with per-stream detail, N-level, duration, and whether the level changed.
- Streak calendar: Visual calendar showing your training consistency, current streak, and longest streak.
- Daily goal tracking: Set a target (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 sessions per day) and track your progress with a pill indicator on the home screen.
- Dark mode and light mode: Choose Light, Dark, or follow your system setting.
iPhone & iPad
- Sessions and settings sync automatically through iCloud across all your Apple devices
- An animated banner shows iCloud sync status in real time
- Free daily limit (3 sessions) syncs across your Apple devices, so you can’t bypass it by switching devices
- In dual-stream modes, different audio streams play in your left and right ears simultaneously for clear separation
Android
- Backup to Cloud: Tap “Backup to Cloud” to export your data to Google Drive, email, or any storage app via the Android share sheet
- Auto-backup: Optionally save a backup file to a local folder you choose after each session (warns: disconnects if the app is uninstalled)
- Restore: Import a backup file from any source — local storage, Google Drive, or any cloud your device can access
- Free daily limit (3 sessions) is tracked on your device
- Audio streams are centered (both ears) — still fully playable, just without stereo separation
